Hiking around Lake Großer Arbersee: A Nature Adventure in the Bavarian Forest

Hiking around the Great Arber Lake

A Nature Experience in the Bavarian Forest

Are you looking for a relaxing hike in the Bavarian Forest that shows you the beauty of nature? Then the Great Arber Lake is just right for you. The Great Arber Lake is a picturesque mountain lake that lies below the Great Arber, the highest mountain in the region. The lake offers you a magnificent view of the surrounding forests and rocks and is a natural monument that was shaped by the last ice age. The lake is a popular destination for families, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation.

To circle the Great Arber Lake, there is a low-barrier circular hiking trail that is suitable for all age groups. The trail is about 1.6 kilometers long and takes about half an hour depending on your pace and breaks. The trail is well signposted and leads you along the shore, where you can admire the beauty of the lake and the impressive Arberseewand. The trail is also stroller and wheelchair friendly, so you can enjoy the hike with the whole family.

The hike around the Great Arber Lake

The circular trail starts from the Arberseehaus, which you can walk in clockwise or counterclockwise direction. We recommend you to take the trail in clockwise direction to have the best views of the lake. The trail leads you first along the south shore, where you can see the floating islands and the Arberseewand. The Arberseewand is a steep rock wall that rises over 300 meters above the lake and offers an impressive natural spectacle.

At the west shore, the landscape changes and you walk through a spruce forest with mossy rocks. There you have a nice view of the Arberseehaus and the Great Arber. At the north shore, you go through a moorland, which you cross on wooden walkways. There you can discover the diverse flora and fauna of the lake, which is under nature protection. Finally, you reach the starting point again and can end your hike with a visit to the Arberseehaus.

Getting to the Great Arber Lake

The starting point for the hike is the hiking parking lot on the Arberseehochstraße, which can be reached by car from our holiday apartments Am Kaisersteig in less than 20 minutes. There you can park your car for a fee or arrive by hiking bus. From the parking lot, you follow the path to the Arberseehaus, a cozy restaurant with terrace, which offers you a refreshment before or after the hike. There you can also rent a pedal boat to explore the lake from a different perspective.
